The figures in the book are Cardinal Manning (the second Archbishop of Westminster), Florence Nightingale (English social reformer, and the founder of modern nursing), Thomas Arnold (English educator and historian) and General Gordon (a British Army officer and administrator who saw action in the Crimean War as an officer in the British Army). In his remarks in the Preface, Strachey notes that up until that point, Victorian biographies had been 'as familiar as the cortège of the undertaker, and wear the same air of slow, funereal barbarism.' Also by this point, he had come to the belief that those lauded in Victorian society had at best, been hypocrites who sought to claim moral superiority without true cause. ![]() ![]() Originally published in 1918, it consists of four biographies of leading figures in Victorian England. Despite a few rough edges, the Insula performances of all the pieces here demonstrate vividly how much they believe in the quality of this music too. The Third Symphony, first performed at a Conservatoire concert in 1849, is unquestionably the finest work here as Equilbey shows, it’s a work of tremendous energy and verve, with stylistic links to Farrenc’s German counterparts certainly, but also with a flavour that’s distinctly its own. Her orchestral writing may not be as quirky and wildly imaginative as that of her contemporary Berlioz, who was a great admirer of her music, but at its best in the symphonies it easily stands comparison with the equivalent works by Schumann and Mendelssohn. Those five works are more than enough to fix Farrenc’s position as a distinctive and significant voice in 19th-century French music. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Review of billy summers![]() ![]() Joel has been claiming that he has some valuable information that the police wants in order to make some type of deal, and apparently someone doesn't want him talking, which is why Billy has been hired to take him out. Wang developed a unique literary world that manages to merge modern day innovations into a deeply traditional world that has more in common with pre-electrical age, perhaps late 1800s, than present day. ![]() It only took a chapter or two before I became hooked, with the first passing mention of magic being so subtle and elegantly woven into a playful scene that I had to reread the paragraph to make sure my first understanding was correct. My friend, Amanda, author of A Wizard’s Forge, messaged me that I absolutely had to add The Sword of Kaigen to my reading list because, “it’s the best book I’ve read in several years.” With that high praise, I immediately started looking into Wang’s novel that had just been announced as the the winner of the 5th Self Publishing Fantasy Blog Off (SPFBO5) where 300 self published books had been whittled down to one winner over an 11 month period. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments The innocent mage![]() ![]() I read the Charlie Bone series, it was fantastic besides the total lack of originality.
